Google Cloud Storage monitoring integration

New Relic integrations with the Google Cloud Platform (GCP) include one that reports Google Cloud Storage data to New Relic. This document explains how to activate the GCP Cloud Storage integration and describes the data it reports.

Features

Google Cloud Storage is GCP's object storage service for serving website content, archival and disaster recovery, and distributing data objects via direct download. New Relic Cloud Storage integration collects API request, network, object count, and stored-bytes metrics for each bucket.

Activate integration

To enable the integration, follow standard procedures to connect your GCP service to New Relic:

Polling frequency

New Relic integrations query your GCP services according to a polling interval that varies by integration. The polling frequency for Google Cloud Storage is 5 minutes. The resolution is 1 data point every minute.

Workload Identity Federation

Find and use data

After you enable the integration, your Cloud Storage buckets appear as entities in the New Relic entity explorer. To see dashboards and manage services, go to one.newrelic.com > All capabilities > Infrastructure > GCP.

All Cloud Storage metrics available in GCP Cloud Monitoring are collected as dimensional metrics in the Metric event type. Additional metrics beyond this table are collected automatically. See Google's Cloud Storage metrics documentation for the complete list.

Key metrics — Bucket

Metric name

Unit

Description

gcp.storage.api.request_count

Count

Number of Cloud Storage API requests served by the bucket, faceted by method and response_code.

gcp.storage.network.received_bytes_count

Bytes

Network bytes received by the bucket, faceted by method.

gcp.storage.network.sent_bytes_count

Bytes

Network bytes sent from the bucket, faceted by method.

gcp.storage.storage.object_count

Count

Total number of objects stored in the bucket, faceted by storage_class.

gcp.storage.storage.total_bytes

Bytes

Total bytes stored in the bucket, faceted by storage_class.

gcp.storage.storage.total_byte_seconds

Byte-seconds

Time-weighted bytes stored in the bucket, used for billing calculations, faceted by storage_class.

gcp.storage.authn.authentication_count

Count

Number of authenticated requests against the bucket, faceted by authentication_method and result.

gcp.storage.authz.acl_operations_count

Count

Number of ACL-based authorization operations against the bucket, faceted by acl_operation.

gcp.storage.autoclass.transition_operation_count

Count

Number of Autoclass transition operations applied to objects in the bucket, faceted by source and target storage class.

For the complete list of Cloud Storage metrics, see Google's Cloud Storage metrics documentation.

Service account or user account

Find and use data

After connecting the integration to New Relic and waiting a few minutes, data will appear in the New Relic UI. To find and use integration data, including your and your alert settings, go to one.newrelic.com > All capabilities > Infrastructure > GCP > Google Cloud Storage.

To create custom dashboards for the integration, create queries for the GcpStorageBucketSample event type with the provider value GcpStorageBucket.

GcpStorageBucketSample

The integration reports metric data for all values of method and response_code:

  • response_code: The response code of the requests.
  • method: The name of the API method called.

The metric data that New Relic receives from your Google Cloud Storage integration includes:

Metric

Description

api.Requests

Delta count of API calls.

network.ReceivedBytes

Delta count of bytes received over the network.

network.SentBytes

Delta count of bytes sent over the network.
